Quad/ATV Hire in Kefalonia, Greece: Everything You Need To Know

EditorWritten by Lucas|Feb. 18, 2022 in City Guide (Cephalonia)

Cephalonia, also known as Kefalonia, is the largest of the Greek Ionian Islands. The island is known particularly for its abundance of natural beauty. The coastal regions of the island are rocky and rugged with occasional coves covered in soft, sandy beaches. Natural features like Melissani Cave and Mount Aenos draw tourists from all over the world to be enchanted by the mystical characteristic of the island’s uninhabited parts.

The capital city of Cephalonia is Argostoli. And while the top attractions on the island are decidedly the natural formations, Cephalonia offers a great deal in the way of urban entertainment as well. There are interesting cultural landmarks that speak to the rich history of Cephalonia and quaint fishing villages with brightly colored houses sitting upon the towering cliffs. With so much to do and see on the island of Cephalonia, the best way to make the most of your visit is to hire a quad bike and explore as much of the island as you can.

What Is the Cost of Quad Bike Hire in Cephalonia?

If you want to rent a more basic ATV for getting around the island, such as a Linhai 200cc ATV, you can expect to pay around €40 per day on the low end. Many rental shops also offer more powerful quad bikes in a similar price range, so it might be worth upgrading to a 425cc or 450cc ATV for a small extra cost. Some parts of Kefalonia are fairly hilly, so a more powerful ATV might be the desirable option.

If you’re looking for something in a lower price range, motor scooters can be rented on the island for as low as €18 per day. A motor scooter will be just fine if you plan on staying in the more metropolitan areas of Cephalonia, but if you want to do some off-roading, you’ll need to hire a quad.

Where Can You Rent an ATV in Cephalonia?

If you plan on flying into Kefalonia International Airport Anna Pollatou, you won’t be able to find ATV hire services located at the airport. However, there are some companies online who will deliver a rental ATV directly to your arrival terminal so you can drive your ATV directly to your accommodation on the island.

The city of Argostoli on the western peninsula of the island also has quite a few options for quad rentals, as well as rentals of other vehicles like boats, cars, motorcycles, and scooters. You can also find rental shops on the southern end of the island in Svoronata. There are some ATV rental shops on the western end of the island, but they’re far more scarce.

Is It Safe To Drive a Quad Bike in Kefalonia?

As with driving in any foreign country, it takes some time to adjust to the pace of traffic in Kefalonia. Take your time and don’t get stressed out when getting used to the road conditions on the island. Traffic in Kefalonia can be particularly chaotic due to the fact that there are a high number of rental vehicles and foreign drivers on the road. It’s best to drive defensively at all times, especially when in areas of high congestion.

If you’re driving near the coastline, you should be aware that many of the roads border cliffs and are not very well-maintained. There are many places where you will have to turn around a corner on a rocky road where the distance between the road and the edge of the cliff is very small. Take these corners slowly and carefully and you’ll be just fine.

Do You Need an International Driving Permit To Hire a Quad in Greece?

If you want to hire an ATV or any other kind of motor vehicle in Greece, you’ll need to have an international driving permit as well as a valid license from your home country if you’re a foreigner. You should apply for your IDP at least two weeks prior to your departing flight for Greece, as that’s how long it typically takes to arrive in the mail.

You can apply for your international driving permit here. There is an application fee of $20, but once you have your international driving permit, it’s valid for one full year. Some rental shops might rent you a vehicle without an IDP, but you could be fined up to €1,000 by Greek police for driving without one.

What Are the Best Things To Do in Cephalonia by Quad Bike?

So, now that you have all the information you need to rent an ATV in Cephalonia, here are some of the best things to do on the island with your new set of wheels:

Assos Village

Among the many beautiful fishing villages throughout the Ionian Islands, Assos Village is perhaps the most idyllic. The village sits on crystal-clear waters with a row of towering cliffs behind it. The houses are painted in an array of pastel colors that reflect on the water to form a truly spectacular sight. The area around the village also has some areas of luscious greenery and breathtaking views of the ocean.

You can sit in one of the village's several taverns and restaurants and watch the fishing boats depart and return to the harbor, all while enjoying some authentic Greek cuisine. Assos Village is about a 50 minute drive north from the capital city of Argostoli, but the drive is so beautiful that it will feel like no time at all.

Myrtos Beach

Myrtos Beach is often voted the most incredible beach in all of Greece, and for good reason. From the pristine white sand to the turquoise water to the dramatic cliffs that serve as a backdrop, everything about Myrtos Beach is absolutely awe-inspiring. You should pick up some food from one of the local vendors and set up a picnic on the beach, and then spend several hours lounging out on the sand and floating around in the water.

Myrtos Beach is located about 40 minutes north from Argostoli and about 20 minutes south from Assos Village. The drive from either location will take you along the rugged coastline, where there are endless places to stop and snap an incredible photo.

Mount Aenos

One of the most captivating views in all of Cephalonia is the view from Mount Aenos, also known as Mount Ainos. The mountain is the tallest on the entire island, and it’s located within a national park area. Feel free to explore one of the park’s amazing hiking trails on foot, or take your rental ATV right to the summit of the mountain, which is known as Megas Soros.

The best place to access the trails to Mount Aenos is in the small village of Digaleto, which is about a 35 minute drive east from Argostoli. As you get closer and closer to the mountain, you’ll see the terrain change from the coastal flora to thick forests of black pine and Greek fir.

Hit the Kefalonian Backroads on an ATV

There are many amazing attractions on Kefalonia, but one of the best ways to spend your time on the island is to rent an ATV and start exploring the roads less traveled. Around every corner, you’ll find a hidden view that you can brag to your friends back home about for the rest of your life.
