Is it safe to rent a scooter in Sorrento?

Driving a rental scooter in Sorrento is certainly an experience you will never forget. However, the reasons for this are both good and bad. Driving past the Bay of Naples on a scooter is a truly surreal experience with all of the incredible views it offers and the feeling of the Italian wind on your face. Unfortunately, the roads in Sorrento and the surrounding areas are notorious for being dangerous and difficult to navigate.

If you are set on driving in Sorrento, the best way to do so is with a scooter. Roads in Sorrento are quite busy and narrow, and navigating in a vehicle any larger than a scooter can get very hairy. The Sorrento town center has a great deal of traffic at nearly all times of the day, and parking can be very difficult to find and costly. If you are not experienced with driving a motor scooter, Sorrento is probably not the best place to practice.

Amalfi Drive, which runs through Sorrento, is a generally dangerous road. If you plan on traveling from Sorrento to Positano along the Amalfi Drive, it’s probably best to take public transportation rather than riding a rental scooter. This stretch of road is particularly accident-prone, and most locals recommend that foreigners do not attempt to make this drive on their own.

If you are comfortable with driving a scooter, there are some beautiful and less busy roads around Sorrento that you should be able to navigate safely and easily. Drive slowly and cautiously, and it should make for a pleasant and memorable experience on your Italian vacation.
