Santa Marta is a city in Northern Columbia situated on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. The Simón Bolívar International Airport, just 14kms away, serves the city from all corners of the globe. Santa Marta is the fourth largest city within the Caribbean region of Columbia and is on the other side of a wide bay separating it from the city of Barranquilla.
The bay is bridged by a natural land barrier around 200kms long. Santa Marta is a busy city port and is one of the first places that the Spanish decided to call home. There is so much to do in and around this city that you are simply spoilt for choice.
Santa Marta is a great stepping stone to going on an adventure deep into the Tayrona National Natural Park. In fact, it makes sense to hire a motorcycle in this region and really get to grips with the stunning terrain and have the flexibility of heading down those narrow trails. This is an especially good idea if you want to visit the Lost City of Teyuna, which is a great archaeological site deep in the heart of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains.
Back in Santa Marta, you can go for plenty of boat trips into the Caribbean and see some of the aquatic life that calls this place home. If you fancy doing some sailing to the Taytrona and exploring the park that way. If you want to try some Columbian cuisine, then there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, such as Lulo.
