Arriving into Rethymno’s small airport or traveling overland, a motorcycle or scooter hire gives you the freedom to explore this historic seaside city and surrounding region of Crete at your own pace. Wander narrow Venetian alleyways and the restored harbor area before heading up to Rethymno’s 16th century fortress, which offers sweeping views over the city and coastline. Stopping to enjoy fresh seafood along the way.
Venturing east leads you to some of Crete’s best beaches, like the long sandy stretch of Episkopi and laidback Panormo. Picturesque Bali village, with its pastel-hued houses and sleepy waterfront is also a must. Head inland and you’ll find yourself amid olive and cypress dotted hillsides, perfect for enjoying the rugged beauty of rural Crete from the seat of your rented motorbike or quad.
Quaint mountain villages like Anogeia and Zoniana offer a glimpse of traditional Cretan life. Don’t miss the stunning Lake Kournas, surrounded by dramatic cliffs. For ancient history, drive 30mins to the Roman town of Aptera.
The seaside resort of Georgioupolis with its pretty square lined with tavernas is also nearby. While Rethymno itself provides enough to occupy a few days, motorcycle and scooter rental gives you the opportunity to also explore highlights of western Crete like the Samaria Gorge or beaches of Falassarna and Elafonisi, or make a day trip to Chania. With so much diversity in landscapes, culture and history, Rethymno is the perfect base to experience Crete’s beauty.
