Rethymno is a city on the Greek island of Crete. It is located on the northern border with the sea. The closest airport is Chania International Airport Ioannis, around 63kms away.
Due to its relative distance from the airport, Rethymno does not get heavily inundated with tourists. For this reason, it still has its old city charm. Its main feature of the Venetian harbor, which is filled with an array of fish boards, ready to catch a seafood delight for the local restaurants.
It also boasts a lot of 16th century and ancient architecture. As this city is so ancient and still retains its original features, a great way to get about without any hassle is to hire a motorcycle, a hire scooter, or even a quad bike. It is a great way to visit all the local places of interest, like all the boutiques and historical sites like the Venetian Fortezza Castle and the Rimondi Venetian Fountain.
It is a popular mode of transport among the locals who realize that traveling by car can have its difficulties along the narrow roads and lanes. Motorbike travel is also a great way to travel along the coastal roads or go inland to some of the mountainous towns and villages such as Spili. Rethymno is around 88kms away from the capital of Crete Heraklion, which can be visited for a day trip.
There are many other towns located on the coastal road, such as Georgioupoli which is a respite town with a lot of bars and restaurants if you fancy somewhere a little different one evening.
