Now you’re exploring Greece! Skiathos is a small Greek island that is in the northwest Aegean Sea. It is the westernmost island in the northern Sporades group and east of the Pelion peninsula.
It’s a small island where you can ‘taste’ the color and smell the ‘emotion’ of it all. The island is served by its own airport which is just over a mile from the center of the city and is best explored on a scooter rental, a quad, or on a hired motorbike. Now, one thing you must know about Greece is that they have pride in and a sense of national identity that is unrivaled on the planet.
So be sure to keep jokes about democracy and Achilles to a minimum (but it’s open season on every other European!) Visit the Evangelistria Monastery and Kastro which can only be reached by 4x4. Obviously, you have gorgeous beaches and amazing food to sample in your visit to Skiathos, and the locals will gladly share some Uzo with you - but, not when you’re driving (even though they don’t exactly follow this rule).
Hire a scooter and visit the Skiathos old town for a journey into a world that almost doesn’t exist anymore, especially at night where the charm of the city comes to life and is on full display. The Bourtzi Fortress is a great place to start, built by the Venetians on an islet on the east side of the harbor. You can also take ferries to nearby islands or flights to Athens if you need a weekend break in a big city.
