Skyros is a Greek Island around 160kms away from the capital Athens. It is a relatively large island with a total landmass of 209 square kilometers. People have lived on this island since the second millennium BC, and it even has a Skyros coin dating back to 490BC.
The capital of the islands is also called Skyros. This city is made up of a large mountainous hill of Chora where the homes are built upon it in stepped fashion all around, giving a very distinctive and Mediterranean look. Skyros has that beautiful authentic Greek feel about it.
One of the best ways to travel about the small roads and lanes of the town is to hire a motorcycle. This ancient town has so many features that are just not set up for the modern vehicle, so if you want to generally explore, you need to get on that motorbike. Why not weave your way up to the Byzantine Castle atop the mountain of Skyros, or nip along the Magazia Beach and find that perfect secluded spot to enjoy that sandy beach and gorgeous blue waters.
If you are feeling adventurous, why not visit the stunning Panagia Libiani church, which is only 9kms away from the city, and you get to travel along a beautiful mountain pass and through a gorgeous green forest. The Prehistoric town of Palamari is where you can see how the ancient people of Greece lived on the island. Again this is very close, only a little shy of 11kms from the main town.
Make the most of your trip and rent a scooter, motorcycle or even hire a quad/atv to ensure you take all the sights this beautiful island has to offer!
