You can’t really say that you’ve been to Europe until you’ve been to Greece - and you can’t really say you’ve been to Greece until you’ve been to Volos. A coastal port city in Thessaly, the city is located midway on the Greek mainland roughly 200 odd miles north of vibrant Athens and 150 odd miles south of the charming city of Thessaloniki. Needless to say, hiring a scooter, four-wheeler or renting a motorcycle is the way to get around here.
The closest airport to Volos is Volos Airport, about 10 miles away, while Skiathos is about 30 miles away and Thessaloniki is a little further away at 80 miles. Athens airport is a solid 100 miles from the city, so you’re well connected to the world and to Europe, and if you’re an avid rider, hiring a motorbike and driving from the airport to the city will have you feeling like a local in no time, take care though - Greeks use road rules more like suggestions than actual laws. The harbor front is a cool way to spend a walking day, spot the super-luxury yachts, coffee bars, promenade, and a sunset that is second to none.
The city itself is perfect for exploring on a hired scooter, so be sure and act like a local. Drive to Makrinitsa to get amazing views over the city and the sea, and you can hop on the train from Ano Lekhonia to the gorgeous little village of Milies. Definitely take in the Agios Konstantinos Park, and Anavros Park too, with your scooter rental it will be a breeze to get there and back!
