If you’re looking for a classic example of a traditional Sardinian town, then look no further than Alghero. This town, located on the northwestern coast of Sardinia in the region of Sassari, is home to old-style buildings and cobbled streets. The architecture lets you know in no uncertain terms that you’re in Sardinia; indeed, you’ll know from the moment you arrive at Alghero Airport or Porto Torres.
One of the most visited areas of Alghero is La Pelosa, a beach community that’s just outside the city. Also technically outside of the city are the Neptune Caves, which is best accessed by joining one of the daily boat tours. If you’re a hiker or just keen to explore the outdoors, then get a scooter hire or motorcycle hire and take a trip to Porto Conte Regional Natural Park.
It offers the best walks on the island, with some truly stunning views. People looking to sit back and enjoy the sunshine should head to Bombarde beach, which is one of the most beautiful -- and there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area, too. To get a sense of the city, visit the Centro Storico, a cobbled area full of churches and other historical buildings.
If you have rent a motorcycle, then you’ll be better able to visit other towns and cities in Sardinia, too. Some of the best include Ittiri, Sorso, Macomer, and Cabras. You can visit them all pretty easily if you have two wheels and experience the best that island life has to offer!
