Was very happy with my selection of self guided ride through South Island of New Zealand in March 2026!! The rental shop was in contact with us everyday, let us customize our ride before we started. I wanted to add a few places to our journey, which they did and was glad to get a few small hikes to waterfalls and gorges! The rental shop booked us very nice places to stay and took us on some great motorcycle roads!! My BMW 1300 was perfect for me! My riding buddy had a low tire, so contacted the rental shop, they were available for phone call, helped us with tire repair kit and even brought an extra canister of air to us in Queenstown! Tire was good rest of trip! Was glad we did self-guided trip, we could come and go when we wanted, stop wherever we wanted, stay as long as we wanted and eat when and where we wanted! The rental shop and their crew were great!!

I had an amazing experience on my motorbike tour using the rental shop. The staff were very helpful. Very easy to book the motorbike I wanted. I chose a BMW GS900, perfect for touring the South Island. The motorbikes are well maintained and very good condition. Only rained twice in 15 days, the motorbike was still fun to ride, so good on the mountain bends. Dropping the motorbike off on a Sunday with pre arranged time was also very helpful. I left my suit case with them while I went on my 15 day tour of the island. I highly recommend using the rental shop if visiting the island.

I enjoyed hiring my BMW 1300GS from the rental shop. All went smoothly with the hire. The motorbike was outstanding. The changing scenery; from quaint rolling rural hills, to skyline alpine vegetation, deep rain-forest and open coastal surf was thrilling. Small towns trapped in time. I never imagined a motorcycle that could soak up the kilometers so calmly and take care of your comfort so thoughtfully. I feel in love with this motorbike - we seemed to have respect for each other. The South Island - motorcycling paradise.

Made a last minute decision (3 weeks out) to travel to NZ South Island and head to the Burt Munro Challenge. Saw the rental shop on official Burt Munro website and sent an inquiry. Within 36 hours of our initial inquiry, we had 12 days reserved on a BMW1300GS (driver/pillion, GIVI panniers and top box), had exchanged multiple emails and spoken via WhatsApp to discuss the route. The rental shop listened to our riding preferences (desired riding time/km each day, 1-2-3 night stays, other interests, etc...) and sent a thoughtful itinerary. We followed their recommended itinerary making our own bookings and planning our riding details - AWESOME! We did a nice loop that began/ended in Christchurch. All paved roads for us. We have rented in Croatia (x2), Italy, Spain (x2), South Africa. This has been one of, if not the best, of our rental experiences. Top notch service from the rental shop staff. We had a delay getting to NZ and the rental shop was super responsive and accommodating. Staff picked us up from the airport and took time to thoroughly review road safety and driving in New Zealand (lots of tips and advice). On return, they shuttled us to our hotel in central Christchurch. The motorbike was in excellent condition with new tires and a full tank of gas. No problems at all. You can't see it all - so don't even try to cram everything in 😁. Hoping to return for another and highly recommend the rental shop!!

Last minute decision to fly in to Christchurch from Canada and hire a motorcycle for a two week self guided tour. I contacted a few motorbike companies via WhatsApp and email. The rental shop was quickest with response to inquiries, we spoke about their expansive fleet of various motorbikes and options available. Within 36 hours we had arranged for motorbike rental, flights, and possible routes. The rental shop staff were very responsive to help us put this together on short notice, at a fair price. The rental shop picked us up at the hotel, had the motorbike outside and ready to go, offered a very good deal on rental gear (which was brand new, good quality) as we were not going to pack our own gear for the quick turn around (and save on airport fees). We own 3 motorbikes (GSA, KLR, and GL). The rental shop looked at the possible weather we'd be experiencing, and considering quite a variation in weather this time of year, and having my pillion. We decided to go with his GL. There is some wonderful technical, along with sweepers in southern NZ. Highly recommend the rental shop.

I have rented a lot of motorbikes, but this was the best experience by far. Last minute booking, able to pick up the motorbike the same day. The motorbike was in great condition, and I loved every second of it. Pick up was smooth while having a nice conversation. Very friendly and accommodating people! The pick up location is on the outskirts of Christchurch which is a huge plus in my book, within 20 minutes I was on awesome roads enjoying the ride. Can highly recommend, and will definitely be coming back! Thanks for making my trip one to remember!

Great service, quality motorbike and easy to deal with. After struggling to find a rental motorbike to take off the tarmac the rental shop was able to set me up with a Tenere. I was picked up from the airport and fairly quickly released to the wild on an immaculately maintained motorbike. When the weather turned sour and I was isolated on the wrong side of some road closures I was able to extend the rental and arranged some flexibility with return of the motorbike. On return I was given another ride back to my accommodation. Minutes away from the airport, I would use this company again and happy to recommend for others. Thank you the rental shop.

I rented a Suzuki DL650 for 11 days touring of the South Island. The motorbike was well set up with touring panniers which were perfect for detaching and taking into motels. Wei and Anson looked after everything with helpful and professional hints. Pickup and return to my hotel made the trip super convenient. I hope to return!

Words don't do this company and the ride justice. The contact was professional and timely. Wei from the start was informative and responsive from start to end. I hired a BMW GS1250 R, a motorbike normally I wouldn't ride as a KTM owner, and it was outstanding. Bottom end torque, heated grips, amazing seat, and suspension. There is so much to this motorbike, and I highly recommend riding it, as the journey was 5 days long, and I pulled up well after each day. If you have a problem throughout your journey, don't hesitate to reach out to Wei. Actually, I would advise the sooner you let him know the better as he can arrange replacement motorbikes and provide technical support. He will give a full run down on the motorbike and pay attention if it is a new ride. Finally, there is no amount of words to describe what you see and experience from rolling hills to snow-capped mountains and then the weather. Don't be afraid either as Wei does check in with local knowledge and suitable route options. Even ask the locals as they are a wealth of knowledge. This is beyond a 5 star rating for me, and I am already planning my return. Thank you, Wei, for a life experience and a journey I won't forget.

I just finished touring the South Island on an African Twin that I hired from Epic motorcycle rental. The motorbike was perfect and very well maintained. I dealt with Wei, who not only made the process extremely easy, but also spent time helping me map out the best roads to ride and sites to see. The guys at Epic Ride were great to deal with a lot of information before the ride , where to go and where to stay , made my solo trip very easy I hired a KTM 890 for 10 days , great motorbike , went well never missed a beat , the saddle bags were very functional . Can not highly recommended them to hire a motorbike in NZ , I will return for the next Adventure

Just returned a ktm 790 and a Yamaha T7 after 9 days. I have been fortunate to have been on adventure motorbike trips on 4 different continents. This was hands down the best. The paved streets are like a race track super fun and curvy no pot holes or sand. You can take dirt roads forever and get way into the back country. The motorbikes were perfect our rental gear was new and top quality. The crew at epic rides was also top notch. I really can’t say enough about this trip. If you come you too will be blown away. This is the first adventure motorbike trip that I have been on that at the end I am not sick of being in a motorbike. I could just keep going. Roger Mercaldi. USA

It was a pleasure to rent the Honda CB500X from the rental shop for a two-week tour across both the North and South Islands. The motorcycle was well-prepared and performed flawlessly, showing no signs of wear or issues throughout the journey. I conducted daily checks, but everything remained in excellent condition. The tires were in good shape, the brakes responsive, and the suspension both smooth and comfortable. Overall, it was a safe, reliable, and easy-to-handle motorbike. Together with my son, who rode his own motorbike, we covered over 3,900 km from Auckland to Queenstown, traveling along both the eastern and western coasts-creating unforgettable memories. I sincerely thank the rental shop for their contribution to this successful and memorable adventure.

I was lucky to get a new motorbike with about 1000 km on the odometer. So the bike was in a perfect condition, the approach of the rental shop was excellent. They were very helpful with everything we needed. One thing that is important to advice to customers is to bring their own inner bags for luggage boxes. They are not included. The rental shop people were nice enough to get us some they had but it may potentially be a problem.

We did a two week tour over both islands and the motorbikes had no issues at all. Good people there. We even damaged one motorbike and the people were extremely fair in the cost to cover the damage, no markup at all. I would highly recommend renting here.

The Best Motorcycle Rental Company in New Zealand. Nan and his crew were the best in making a 3 week tour of the South Island a true dream ride. I rented a late model BMW F750GS and had a trouble-free trip. Nan was always available through the holidays to help me out and answer questions. Book with Te Waipounamu and save grief from renting at other discount rental companies in Christchurch. BTW: second time renting from Te Waipounamu, first time being in 2011. Both great experiences.

I hired a Honda CB500X for a week in March this year. Pick up and drop-off in Auckland was pleasingly straightforward. The motorbike was in good condition and raised no issues during the rental period. Communication in the lead up to hiring was good.

When I was a boy growing up in Iowa there was a small local sporting goods store whose posted slogan was, “In Business for Fun”. That is the feeling I got from Te Waipounamu Motorcycle Tours Ltd: completely professional, but in business for the fun of motorcycling. John Rains is the proprietor of Te Waipounamu Motorcycle Tours. The motorbikes were well sorted out. The price negotiated for our extended rental was fair to both of us. In addition, both of us really appreciated John’s willingness to mount a Ram ball on my motorbike for a GPS and the throttle lock we brought with us, on my friend’s motorbike. Te Waipounamu Motorcycle Tours’ courtesy was further extended to us when they agreed to store our flight luggage and clothing during our 25 day tour of discovery, which did in no small part, make it all possible. John took the time at the end of our trip to sit down and talk with my friend and me at the end of tour supper, which was a welcome surprise and very much appreciated. Although John wasn’t seated near my passenger, she commented to us that John had been very kind and gracious to her. She appreciated the personal attention and courtesy. The personal touch impressed all of us. Top flight service can be a rare commodity in today’s fast paced world, whether here in the States or in New Zealand, but we found it at Te Waipounamu Motorcycle Tours Ltd. Hired a motorbike for 3 weeks to tour South Island. Easy going and friendly bunch of guys run this place, and offered good advice on fuel, distances and places to go. Their knowledge of NZ was exceptional. Easy and pragmatic check in and check out. The motorbike was in great condition and performed faultlessly for 3 weeks and 1800km. Highly recommended!!

Rented a motorbike for two weeks and roamed around the south Island. Service in and out was friendly and helpful, with lots of advice from experienced riders. The motorbike (a 2015 DL650) was delivered tuned up and ready to roll, and it purred like a kitten for 4500 km worth of mountains and chaos. Price was about 300$ less than competing companies. To improve : the gear I was loaned (at a bargain price of 50 bucks for head to toe equipment) was all well worn. Serviceable but showing age and wear. That's ok, I came to ride not to win fashion shows.

Firstly I’d like to thank John,Gordon,Perry and their crew for their help on our South Island motorbike trip. I admit that after reading a couple of dodgy reviews online I was a bit sceptical so I called John and had a conversation with him that put my mind at rest (it seems a disgruntled customer got his mates to leave bad reviews even though they didn’t hire motorbikes from Te Waipounamu!).John kept us in the loop by contacting us via email and phone in the weeks before the trip which was much appreciated.We arrived in Christchurch from Australia and went round to check on the motorbikes the day before our hire period where John and the crew allowed me to set up our motorbikes to our preference and fit intercoms and GPS in their workshop and using their tools all with that famous kiwi banter and good humour.We had an absolutely fantastic lap of the beautiful South Island including a couple of roads recommended by Gordo.Both motorbikes ran perfectly and started easily every day even in torrential rain on the west coast and it was good knowing that if we did have problems help was only a phone call away.On returning the motorbikes I was again allowed into the workshop to remove our intercoms and GPS and given a beer to boot!To follow on from this great service as we were trying to organise a taxi John stepped up and offered us a lift to our accommodation which was over and above the call of duty!Te Waipounamu Motorcycle tours come very highly recommended from both Belinda and I,don’t be put off by negative reviews these guys are fantastic and I wouldn’t have any qualms about renting from them for my next South Island motorbike trip and neither should you.Steve Herbert.
