Peru’s capital, Lima, is one of the largest cities in South America - and a popular tourist destination for those visiting Peru. From historic architecture to beautiful beaches, there are many attractions worth travelling to Lima. A must-see attraction is the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Lima.
Here you’ll find 16th Century colonial landmarks such as the Cathedral of Lima. For an even older slice of history, make sure to visit Huaca Pucllana - a pyramid dating back to pre-Incan times. Fascinating museums worth checking out include Larco Museum and Museo de Arte de Lima.
When it comes to great beaches, head to San Bartolo for sunbathing or Miraflores for some great surfer spots. Lima makes a great base for exploring Peru. Head up into the Andes and you can visit the equally historic and bustling city of Huancayo.
It’s also possible to travel to Ayacucho from here - a city known for its lively Easter celebrations and folk handicrafts. Go south and you can also visit the coastal city of Pisco, which is known for its wine and array of wildlife. The sandy beach town of Paracas, from where you can see Humboldt penguins, is a little further south.
The scenic mountain city of Huaraz meanwhile lies to the north of Lima. You can reach Lima by taking a flight into Jorge Chavez Airport or by taking a boat into Callao. To help you explore this sprawling city hiring a motorcycle is definitely the best option.
On top of helping you to travel across the city, this could enable you to explore other cities and sights nearby. Scooter hire is a good option too if you are planning to stay within the city bounds.
