The Aegean island of Chios makes for the perfect Greek getaway, best explored with motorcycle, scooter, or quad hire from Chios Island National Airport. As Greece's fifth largest island, Chios has plenty of terrain to traverse across its mountainous interior and pristine coastline. Wandering the streets of the main town, also called Chios, you'll find remnants of medieval Genoese architecture along with influences of Ottoman rule.
The striking Nea Moni monastery with its 11th-century mosaics and historic windmills are also worth a visit. Venturing further south, don’t miss the otherworldly sight of the Volcano of Ochi with its intriguing lunar landscape. For beach lovers, Karfas and Agia Fotia have some of the island’s best sandy shores.
Komi is a picturesque seaside village with its set of tiny islands just offshore. At the north end of the island, the mastic villages of Mesta, Pyrgi, and Olympi showcase the island's unique mastic culture with ornate geometric designs on the exterior of their houses. Beyond the main island, smaller islets like Oinousses and Psara are accessible by boat, offering even more secluded island escapes.
Day trips to Inousses let you encounter old windmills and unspoiled nature while Psara commemorates the island’s history of rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. With so much diverse terrain and scenery packed into its small area, Chios is best traversed on two wheels.
