Faro, the capital of the Algarve, keeps its’ distinctly Portuguese feel despite it being a resort town. Discover well-maintained parks, plazas, a must-see marina, and a beautiful Old Town surrounded by medieval walls. The charm of the Old Town is found in the winding cobbled streets and buildings that show off a multitude of styles because of successive reconstruction.
You’ll be kept interested by the many churches, museums and cafes Faros’ Old Town has to offer. Faro has a bustling and colorful port that’s worth a visit. The marina is full of fishing boats and cruisers that wind towards the open sea past islands and marshland.
The wetlands of the Ria Formosa nature reserve are among the most important natural habitats in Europe, so you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some local wildlife. Explore the deserted islands yourself on a sightseeing cruise to Ilha Deserta. A single restaurant lies on Ilha Deserta surrounded by sandy beaches, making a lunch worth telling your friends about.
For more sightseeing, head to the Moorish Arco Da Vila, a 19th-century gateway. The roads lead to Largo Da Se, where Faro’s cathedral takes center stage. Opposite here, you’ll find Paco Episcopal, the bishops’ palace.
Though the 18th-century building isn’t open to the public, it’s worth taking a moment of your visit to stare in wonder. Faro has many notable sites worth your time. Rent a motorcycle or hire a scooter for the best way to wind through the cobbled streets and take it all in.
