Arriving into Cluj-Napoca International Airport or even Brasov International Airport puts you in prime position to explore the historic Transylvanian city of Turda and its surrounds with your own set of wheels. Take your scooter down pedestrianized streets and stop for a strong Romanian coffee in one of the lively cafés on the main square, Piața Republicii. As you explore you’ll notice Hungarian and German influences in the culture, cuisine and architecture, remnants of the town's diverse history. Just on the outskirts of Turda lies its main attraction, the awe-inspiring Salina Turda salt mine.
This vast subterranean salt mine has been producing table salt for centuries but is now an underground theme park and museum. Ride out to the mine's entrance and take an elevator down into its cavernous depths, which feature an underground lake, mini golf course, Ferris wheel and even a saltwater spa. The surrounding countryside also begs to be explored on two wheels.
Stop at scenic Copșa Mică, known as Europe's most polluted town due to its heavy industry but nonetheless picturesque. The charming village of Rimetea with its ancient fortified church is also perfect for a short ride. For incredible views, head into the Apuseni Mountains to see Turda Gorge or drive the Transfăgărășa road, widely considered one of the most stunning mountain roads in Europe.
