Colombo is Sri Lanka’s cosmopolitan and commercial capital. It’s home to several beautiful colonial heritage sites and is a melting pot for various races and religions. Predominantly a city of contrasts, in some places, you’ll find swanky bars and shimmering hotels, while in others, you’ll find bustling marketplaces full of spices, cotton and fresh fruit.
Flying into Colombo, you will arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. It serves both the city itself, and the surrounding area. Scooter hire is available nearby, however its always recommended to reserve online.
If you decide to hire a motorcycle to explore the city, pencil-in the Khan clock tower, Red Mosque and Fort Station for your itinerary. Make sure you visit the colonial sites as well, including the Dutch Reformed Church and the Dutch Period Museum. Also, check out the oldest building in the area, the Colombo Fort, where you can sit back and enjoy a cool beer.
Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city can head to the Royal Colombo Golf Club. Here you’ll find immaculately kept lawns and fairways and play for either 9 or 18 holes. You can also pay a visit to the spectacular 19th century Gangaramaya Temple, perhaps the most significant place of worship in the entire region.
Heading out of Colombo, you quickly get into the countryside. If you have quad bike hire, check out the Sri Pada Wilderness Sanctuary or the Horton Plains National Park. You can also explore the nearby cities of Negombo, Panadura, Kalutara and Rambukkana if you decide on renting a larger motorcycle that is able to better cope with the terrain.
