Do I need an international driving permit in Greece?

If you are a foreigner in Greece, law requires you to have an International Driving Permit as well as a government-issued license from your home country. If you are stopped by police while operating a motor vehicle in Greece and you are missing either of these two items, you are at risk of having to pay a fine. While rental agencies in Mykonos and all over Greece commonly rent out motor vehicles to people who only have a driver’s license and do not have an IDP, it is better to be safe than sorry and get an IDP before you start driving in Greece. If you are a USA citizen, you can apply for an IDP here.

Should I rent a scooter in Mykonos?

If you’re wondering whether or not you should rent a scooter during your trip to Mykonos, Greece, the answer, plain and simple, is YES. There is no better way to get around the island than to hop on your scooter and feel the breeze coming off the Aegean Sea as you cruise along coastal roads. Sure, you could take public transport to the popular beaches in the south with relative ease, but there’s so much more to discover on this island! Renting a scooter gives you the freedom to go wherever you want, and explore every nook and cranny of this Mediterranean paradise. Not to mention that riding a scooter, even if you aren’t on a gorgeous island like Mykonos, is fun by itself. You get to twist that throttle and hear the engine rev up; it’s exhilarating! And if you’ve never driven a motor scooter before, don’t worry. It’s super easy and safe as long as you wear a helmet, stay vigilant, and follow the rules of the road.

What to do in Mykonos?

So now that you know HOW to rent a motor scooter in Mykonos, you probably want to know where to go once you have it! Here are some basic suggestions for places to explore on the island:

  • You can’t go to Mykonos and not visit Little Venice. This super-vibrant area of the island features a ton of beautiful restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s also great to just weave through the narrow streets and admire the windmills, or maybe even catch the sunset over the sea. Little Venice is located on a peninsula on the west coast of Mykonos, not far from the airport.

  • Hop on your scooter and take a ride down to Agrari Beach. It’s a public beach so you don’t have to worry about paying to get on, and once you’re there, you’ll be speechless at the incredibly clear water and soft white sand. There’s plenty of places to rent equipment for water sports like parasailing or jet skiing. And if you’re looking for a bite to eat, the Agrari Beach Restaurant & Beach Bar serves incredible Mediterranean-style seafood and some lovely cocktails to go with it.  Agrari Beach is located on the southern coast of Mykonos.
  • Not far from Agrari Beach is the more popular Paradise Beach. And while it's more of a tourist hotspot, meaning it's not quite as peaceful, it’s still definitely worth seeing. The water is incredibly clear and warm, it’s generally kept clean, and there are plenty of luxury suites for rent. Paradise beach is a PERFECT spot for honeymooners.
  • Slightly inland from Paradise Beach is the Fish Market, which is quite a sight to see. The local fisherman prepare the catches of the day for distribution all over the island. And you can even buy some fresh fish straight out of the sea!

With so many amazing things to see in Mykonos, you want to be able to travel around the island quickly and freely. Renting a scooter is cheap, easy, and gives you the freedom to explore every inch of this one-of-a-kind island.
