Canterbury is a large region of the south island of New Zealand. It is a beautiful place with stunning diverse geography. It is known for its crystal clear lakes, like Lake Coleridge, Lake Tekapo, and Lake Pukaki, to name a few, as well as its snow-covered mountain range and huge grassy plains.
You can definitely see what many of the locations in Lord of the Rings were filmed n this region. The largest city in the region is Christchurch, a coastal city on the eastern side. It has a distinctly English heritage and has the beautiful Avon river Flowin through it.
The landscape of the region is something that begs to be explored. Close to the city of Christchurch is the Waimakariri River, Regional Park. If you want to get close to nature but still be able to move with ease, why not hire a motorcycle while you are there.
This form of travel allows you to marvel at the landscape and beauty a little better. It is also a great way to get around all those lakes and up into the mountains. If you enjoy hiking, then Canterbury is a great place to come.
There are plenty of trails near the coyote of Christchurch, such as The Rapaki Track and Coopers Knob, and in Northern Canterbury, there is The Hanmer Forest Park Walk and the Mount Richardson Track. There are even skiing opportunities, such as at mount Methven. Canterbury also has a great nightlife scene that you can enjoy at places like the Engineers Bar bar in Christchurch.
