Touching down at Altenrhein Airport puts you within easy reach of Rankweil, Austria. Getting your own set of wheels, whether a motorcycle, scooter or quad bike, means you can start exploring this picturesque town and the Austrian countryside from the moment you arrive. Rankweil sits in the stunning natural amphitheater created by the Rhine Valley, surrounded by forests, mountains and gorges just waiting to be discovered.
The town itself retains much of its medieval character, with its cobblestone streets and historic buildings. Be sure to check out the grand 12th century castle that looms over the town, as well as St. Peter and Paul Church, with foundations dating back to the 9th century. With your own transport, you can venture just outside of Rankweil to see the iconic green slopes of the Bregenzerwald mountains from a new perspective.
Stop to soak in the views, or try paragliding over the valley if you’re feeling adventurous. Follow the winding roads further into the peaks to find crystal clear lakes, cascading waterfalls and scenic hiking trails to explore on foot. On your way back to Rankweil, take the long route via Bludenz to discover quaint villages seemingly frozen in time.
Order a piece of the local favorite, Käsknöpfle pasta, and chat with the friendly locals in the gasthauses. A quick zip around the area on your rented wheels lets you experience so much more beyond the small town. From the historic appeal of Rankweil itself, to the natural beauty that engulfs it on all sides, it’s a picturesque and relaxed base to uncover this slice of rural Austria.
