If you’re heading to Sicily, then you’ll want to check out the second-largest city on the island, Catania. The settlement is served by Catania Airport. However, Sicily has six main airports, as well as several smaller airfields, which can sometimes cause confusion.
Catania is a survivor. It is a city that has managed to weather multiple volcanic eruptions and earthquakes throughout its long history. Now at the beginning of its third millennium as an occupied settlement, it offers keen explorers more adventure than they could possibly imagine.
At the heart of the city is Duomo Square. It plays host to a Norman Cathedral, one of the best examples in the world, dedicated to St. Agatha, the local patron saint. Next to the cathedral is the Palace of the Seminary of the Clerics.
It has a unique black facade due to the use of volcanic stone and ash. If you opt for motorcycle hire, be sure to check out the Palazzo Biscari, the local fish market and the historical monastery San Benedetto on via Crociferi. Also, vist the Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolo l’Arena and the Kiosks of Catania to learn more about the culture and history of the area.
Riding out of Catania, there are many nearby towns and cities to explore, including Paterno to the west, Syracuse to the south, and Messina to the north. Closer by is the beautiful Parco dell’Etna which surrounds Mount Etna, one of the most famous volcanoes in the region. You might also want to head south to the Riserva Naturale Oasi del Simeto, a beautiful wetland nature reserve offering migratory birds and hiking trails.
